Holiday Season Safety Tips- Don't Miss These!

The holiday season is often full of shopping, decorations, food, and family. We can often become so absorbed in traditions and busy schedules that we look past common safety hazards in the home. The holiday season is the most popular time of year for house fires and other safety concerns; Ensure you and your loved ones can celebrate safely this holiday season by following our provided tips.  


When using a real tree: 

-Choose a freshly cut tree 

-Keep it well watered  

-Always turn off the lights when you're not enjoying them, like at night or when you go out 

-Dry trees ignite quickly and burn well, so remove them from your home directly following celebrations  


Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: 

-Have working Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors in the house 

-Have a smoke detector in each bedroom and in hallways outside each room, on every floor 

-Have a working Carbon Monoxide detector on every floor 

-Change alarms that are over 10 years old, and change batteries yearly 

-Develop and practice a home emergency escape plan  


Other tips: 

-Clean the oven well before starting your holiday baking  

-Be cautious of overriding electrical outlets  

-Keep candles away from anything that will burn, and out of reach from children and pets  

-Have the furnace inspected and serviced annually 

-Have the chimney cleaned before used for the holidays, and also periodically throughout the year
