Home Heating Safety Tips

  • When buying a home or a heating system, make sure you receive the heating systems maintenance and operating manuals.
  • Have the heating system serviced by a license technician at least once a year.
  • Supervise children when they are in the same room as the heating system.
  • Examine the heating system often for signs of deterioration. Look for water stains, corrosion and leakage. In force-air systems, clean the furnace air filters frequently, at least twice a heating season.
  • Make sure that warm-air outlets and cold-air returns are not covered by things such as rugs and curtains.
  • Keep the area around the furnace free from dust, lint, paint and other materials or chemicals that could catch fire or explode if too hot.
  • Make sure walls and other obstructions or new renovations do not interfere with the heating supplies air flow. There should be a one metre clearance around the unit.
  • If snow or ice covers your outdoor regulator, contact your fuel supplier. Be sure to repair a defective or leaking eaves trough.
  • Remember to turn off portable heaters when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Install and maintain CO alarms to avoid the risk of CO poisoning.
